Fischer's Marylebone Austrian Day Celebrations

We caught up with Erin McGuinnes, General Manager at Fischer's in Marylebone Village, to discuss how they will be celebrating Austrian Day this year.

Where does the influence for the menu come from?
Fischer’s is inspired by Vienna in the early twentieth century and is a neighbourhood café at the top of Marylebone High Street. Jeremy King, the founder of Corbin & King, wants you to feel as though the restaurant has always been in the neighbourhood. Our classic Viennese café menu has traditional dishes from Austria, Germany and Hungary and we serve breakfast, an all-day menu, as well as a two or three course Prix Fixe Menu for lunch and dinner.

When you visit us at Fischer’s it really should feel like a European café that you can pop in to for a mid-afternoon coffee and slice of cake from our Konditori, a quick brötchen, a sandwich for lunch, or stay for a schnitzel and strudel. The menu is accessible and the feeling of the restaurant is the same.

What are you doing to celebrate Austrian Day this year?
This year Austrian day takes place on Monday 26th of October. The dining room will have the country’s flags on the walls and our team will be dressed up in either dirndls or lederhosen’s and caps – which they love! We often get a lot of Austrian guests and locals from the neighbourhood joining us which makes it a really fun day to celebrate. We’re also offering all of our guests a complimentary glass of Austrian sparkling wine (from 5pm) and Sachertorte petit fours, a rich Austrian chocolate cake, on the day.

Why is celebrating Austrian Day important to Fischer’s?
We’ve celebrated Austrian day every year since we opened our doors in 2014 and it’s our way of bringing a bit of Austrian culture to London, and specifically Marylebone. It’s also a great chance for us to highlight some of the really great Austrian food and wine that’s available in London.

What is the most popular dish on the menu?
Definitely the Wiener Schnitzel, a traditional Viennese dish that has been on our menu since the day we opened. A close second is our apple and cinnamon strudel dessert which has also been on our menu since day one.

These dishes are synonymous with Austrian cuisine and are home cooked comfort foods, which you can enjoy while dining out.

What is the most popular cocktail at Fischer’s?
Similar to our most popular dishes, our bestselling cocktails are also our classics. Dry gin martinis and Negroni’s seem to be favourites with guests and they’ll often stop by for a drink at the bar after work or have one (or two) with their meal.
